In the universe of Warhammer 40,000, humanity isn’t merely shaped by an authoritarian, ultra-militaristic regime. It’s a complex society dominated by a formidable theocracy. Picture an empire where the Emperor of Mankind is worshipped as a god, a notion that fills roughly half the miniatures in the Blood and Zeal set with fervent, misguided devotion. These fervent zealots sincerely believe in their faith, despite it being a misplaced allegiance. They carry the heavy burden of safeguarding vast civilian populations in this dystopian vision of the 41st millennium. On the flip side, the rest of the figures represent followers of Chaos.
The Ecclesiarchy, acting as the religious branch of the empire, is arguably one of the most cunning aspects of the world of 40K. This faction pays homage to a man who repeatedly implored others not to deify him. Yet, the lore clearly outlines how some in this universe saw the potential for power through the creation of the Emperor’s Cult—essentially a manipulative tool for maintaining control over common folks. While the Ecclesiarchy doesn’t directly incite humanity’s darker tendencies like xenophobia or violent extremism, it certainly doesn’t counter them either. The violence and constant fear that permeate every corner of the Imperium aren’t accidental side effects; they are intentionally built into the world. And now, with these miniatures, that truth is starkly visible.
These figures represent some of the most loyal—and brainwashed—fanatics imaginable. It seems almost appropriate to package them alongside Chaos forces. The backstory included in their set highlights that there are potentially billions more Ecclesiarchy members than there are Space Marines. In fact, religious extremists in this specific galactic sector might outnumber even the Imperial Guardsmen. Unfortunately, they’re not the most admirable bunch.
Despite this, the Ecclesiarchy is portrayed as the societal glue that keeps the Imperium of Mankind from completely disintegrating. Their fervor, devotion, and even their hate are crucial in maintaining the fragile human dominion against threats like Chaos, Tyranids, Orks, and numerous other menaces intent on eradicating humankind. So, it’s quite vital to finally have some miniature representations to match those names and roles.
While Blood and Zeal adds meaningful depth to the universe’s narrative and brings fresh content into Kill Team, it also enriches the broader hobby spectrum. These miniatures deserve their place across all realms of the tabletop 40K experience—from Kill Team and Necromunda to the expansive war game Warhammer 40,000 and role-playing games like Imperium Maledictum.
Despite my disdain for these characters, I’m also grateful they exist in physical form. I suggest getting a set, if only to meet them eye-to-eye and appreciate the craftsmanship involved.
