Today brings some tough news from the team at Eidos Montreal, the creative minds behind the celebrated Tomb Raider and Deus Ex series. The studio has just unveiled plans to downsize, affecting a portion of their hardworking staff.
In their official statement released today, Eidos Montreal confirmed that up to 75 employees will be let go. This move comes as a result of the studio’s inability to reassign these talented individuals to other projects within the company. It’s important to note, however, that this decision is not a reflection on the capabilities or efforts of those impacted. The company has assured that it will be offering support to these employees during their transition into the job market.
The statement reads, “Today, we informed our studio staff that we are going to let go up to 75 valuable members, as one of our mandates is coming to an end. It is not a reflection of their dedication or skills, but unfortunately, we don’t have the capacity to entirely reallocate them to our other ongoing projects and services.”
They went on to express their commitment to assist these individuals, emphasizing, “These very talented, highly experienced experts are going to enter the employment market, and we are working to support them through this transition. Eidos-Montréal stays committed to deliver its other projects currently in development.”
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first instance of layoffs at Eidos Montreal in recent times. Just over a year ago, 97 employees were let go due to what was described as “the global economic context.” Adding to this challenging backdrop, their parent company, Embracer Group, had also scrapped plans for a new Deus Ex game around the same period.
Eidos Montreal has made a significant mark on the gaming world, not just with Deus Ex and Tomb Raider, but also with titles like the 2014 reboot of Thief and 2021’s Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Recently, they’ve been lending their expertise to PlayGround Games, contributing as a support studio on the eagerly anticipated Fable for Xbox.
