After catching A Minecraft Movie on the big screen, I decided to linger for a bit, curious to see if there might be a post-credits scene. With Jared Hess, the man behind Napoleon Dynamite, at the helm as director and co-writer, I wondered if he’d take us beyond Steve’s (played by Jack Black) main storyline with his new pals from Chuglas, Idaho, exploring the Overworld and The Nether. There was a chance we might catch a sneak peek of The End or some other part of the Minecraft universe. Who knows, maybe Hess would even hint at piecing together a Minecraft Cinematic Universe, following the suit of Marvel Studios and Paramount.
Most of the audience made a beeline for the exit once the film wrapped up, but I’m glad I trusted my gut and stayed put. It turns out the little surprise they sprinkled in was absolutely worth it.
So, does A Minecraft Movie have something to offer during the credits?
It does indeed, and if you left early, you missed a delightful cameo. The first mid-credits scene features Marlene (played by Jennifer Coolidge), the vice principal of Chuglas’ school, as she cooks breakfast for her new villager boyfriend. Enter her ex-husband, Mr. Gunchie (portrayed by Hiram Garcia), desperately seeking another shot. The amusing twist? The villager, previously known only for a series of garbles, suddenly delivers a heartfelt monologue. And whose voice is it? None other than Matt Berry’s, of What We Do in the Shadows fame. This newfound speech is thanks to Marlene’s love, and as a fun addition, Marlene herself is now fluent in villager!
But wait, there’s more. Stick around until the credits roll, and you’re in for another treat.
Is there a scene after the credits in A Minecraft Movie?
Absolutely, and it rolls as the house lights come up and the final credits disappear. We see Steve (Jack Black) heading back to a house he left behind, one that’s been occupied by someone new. He knocks on the door, and a friendly woman with striking red hair and a green shirt welcomes him. Although we never get a view of her face, she initiates some banter, asking if he’s back to retrieve the old chest in the attic. This mystery woman is revealed to be Alex.
Minecraft fans will recognize Alex as the second default player skin in the game, coming after Steve. She’s a staple in the game’s promotional artwork, serving as the perfect canvas for players to project themselves onto. While the movie shows Steve’s grand exploits in the Overworld, Alex appears to have been living her life in the real world. Her introduction hints she could play a significant role if there’s a sequel in the works.
Though A Minecraft Movie wraps up its storyline nicely, this post-credits scene leaves viewers with a tantalizing hint of more adventures to come. Whether we’ll journey back to the Nether or perhaps take on The End remains to be seen, but it’s safe to say Alex—and that intriguing chest of hers—will be key players moving forward.
