Back in 1997, long before giants like RuneScape and World of Warcraft took center stage, Tibia made its mark as an MMORPG. It’s a nostalgia-inducing name for those who played games in its heyday and one that still captivates many today. Although it hasn’t enjoyed the same level of fame or continuous content updates as some other titles, Tibia boasts a loyal following. Up until now, players have been familiar with just four character classes, but after an amazing 28-year run, there’s finally a fresh addition to the lineup: the Monk.
Tibia’s charm lies in its 2D, pixel art, tile-based world, and while it might seem a bit simplistic when pitted against its more contemporary rivals, looks can be deceiving. Over the years, Tibia’s received numerous updates and expansions that have enriched its fantasy landscape, filling it with all the elements true MMO fans crave: challenging quests, engaging NPCs, guild memberships, epic boss battles, and, let’s not forget, fishing.
Tradition held that players could choose one of four classic classes: the Knight for close combat, the Paladin for ranged attacks, the Sorcerer for casting magical spells, and the Druid for those essential healing powers. But the rigid class system has just been shaken up with the introduction of the Monk.
The Monk is a versatile fighter, capable of delivering melee attacks with mystical abilities that make them a formidable close-range opponent. Additionally, they come equipped with tools for support and healing, offering a well-rounded playstyle. To seamlessly integrate the Monk into Tibia’s existing structure, CipSoft, the game’s developer, had to refine over 130,000 lines of code to ensure this new vocation smoothly interacts with the game’s quest lines, characters, and systems.
As if that wasn’t enough excitement, the game world has also expanded with the addition of a new area called Blue Valley. This update includes 70 new items and 25 new spells, giving seasoned players plenty to explore and discover.
Excitingly, the Monk is now available to play in Tibia, which remains free-to-play on its launcher. As of today, you can also dive into the game via the Epic Games Store.
