Oh man, where to start with Nintendo’s new Switch 2? It’s got this screen that, well, let’s just say it leaves some room for imagination. Chimolog, some reviewer from China, says the response time is a whopping 17.06 ms, which is apparently not great if you’re, like, trying to see things move smoothly. No clue how they tested it though — feels like maybe they eyeballed it. Anyway, this screen’s a 1080p, 120 Hz, and it’s 7.9 inches, which sounds kinda fancy but, uh, looks can be deceiving, I suppose.
So the best this thing can do is 8.88 ms in terms of response — and I’m wondering if I even got that right because it felt like a slow-mo kinda thing. It gets as bad as 27.46 ms, and if you’re into gaming at 60 FPS, you’re probably gonna notice the lag. Chimolog compared it with a bunch of other screens, and the Switch 2 kind of flopped, big time.
And get this, the closest competitor was some Innocn M2U 27 Mini-LED monitor. Don’t ask me what that is, but it apparently smokes the Switch 2 with a response time of 11.06 ms. It’s a 65% better response, like, can you even math that? Seems like Nintendo focused elsewhere, because this thing has contrast and brightness and yadda yadda that match some mainstream screens.
But, brightness uniformity? I don’t even know what that means, but it’s at 1.54%, and supposedly that’s good. Oh, and color gamuts galore — it covers tons of those color thingies. And, I had no idea what an IPS display is until now, but there you go, it’s probably one of those.
A funny bit though – the text readability. They went with a “special RGB” layout. Sounds fancy, but stuff apparently looks blurry? Maybe Nintendo thought wavy text was cool or something.
One little nugget missing – they couldn’t test the screen’s magic at 120 Hz. Rumor has it things get smoother at higher refresh rates, but who knows? Maybe not enough to make a 120Hz dream happen, I guess.
And the twist — the original Switch screen is somehow faster? Monitors Unboxed clocked the Switch 1 at 10ms faster. Wild, right? But honestly, even with this screen fiasco, the Switch 2 is still flying off the shelves. Has some record sales — like 3.5 million units in four days. People love their Nintendo games, rough screens be damned. Let’s hope they drop an OLED version soon, because, oh boy, this one’s a doozy.
