The Last Hero: Journey to the Unknown. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect with a title like that. You know those games that you think are going to be just another fantasy action thing? Yeah, I definitely went in with one brow raised. Anyway—oh, wait. Let’s start over.
So, here’s the deal. There’s this 2D game from Ratalaika Games and Titan Art Games. Picture this: you’re in a magical place—don’t ask which, it’s just magical, okay? Evil Wizard named Voidgem (I know, right?) decides to swipe all these magical relics. Chaos ensues. Enter you, the hero. Sword, shield, bad guys. You get it. Maybe it’s cliché? Or maybe it’s exactly what we need to escape mundane reality? Who knows.
There I was, just minding my own business, controlling a little character with the left stick. Jump with X, swing a sword with Square, shield with Circle. The basics. It had me thinking: how many buttons do we really need to save the world? Oh, and there’s rolling and dashing too, R1 and R2 respectively. Not going to lie, pressing L2 for a special power felt oddly satisfying. Maybe it was just the boss battles. Boss battles always get me.
Gold coins everywhere. Literally falling out of monsters when you beat them. And with these coins? Buy stuff. Meteor showers and fiery split shots. Oh, oh! Sharp spikes from the ground. Seriously, who thought of that? Anyway, potions and gems too. The more health you have at the end of a level, the more gems you get. Kind of makes you rethink your strategy mid-monster-bash.
This game screams Ratalaika all over. Recognize the name? Two things: Platinum trophy (like a shiny badge of honor) and Cross-Buy. Get it for PS4 and PS5. Do I need both? Probably not. Am I tempted? Totally. You basically get two Platinums for the price of one. Just do a bunch of stuff like defeating your first boss—yep, that easy, sort of.
Oh, and the trophies. Silver and gold ones are up for grabs. What do you have to do? Usual hero stuff. Get relics, defeat 100 enemies. The little things, you know? By now you can tell I’m easily distracted. But what’s a journey without some side quests?
Wrapping up now—though I could go on. The Last Hero: Journey to the Unknown is available for $4.99. Cross-Buy and all that jazz. Seriously, if you’re in it for a bit of button-mashing magic, it’s a decent way to spend an afternoon. A potion or two might even help. So, there you go. My chaotic take. If you try it, maybe you’ll see what I mean. Or maybe you won’t. That’s cool too.
