Exciting updates about Dune Awakening have recently emerged, straight from Funcom, outlining the game’s plans after its launch. Alongside these revelations, PC requirements have been unveiled on the game’s Steam store page.
In a concise video featuring Joel Byros, the chief creative officer, Funcom lays out what players can expect once the game is live on May 20. One major highlight is the decision to forgo the traditional MMO subscription model. Instead, Dune Awakening will thrive on optional paid DLC packs releasing alongside free updates.
In these free updates, players can look forward to enhancements that improve the gaming experience, introduce fresh features, and expand the storyline — all vital components for sustaining a live service game. Details about the paid DLCs remain under wraps for now, but players will have the option to purchase them individually or through a season pass bundle, offering multiple items at once.
Byros also disclosed a perk available in certain game editions: an early access window starting May 15. While some players get a head start, this also aids the development team in managing server loads to ensure a seamless game launch—a crucial factor to avoiding the pitfalls of shaky MMO debuts.
Accompanying the video, a Steam post provided further insights, particularly on what players will need in terms of PC specifications.

Additionally, the game will feature some impressive PC extras, like NVIDIA’s DLSS 4, one of the first games to do so, as well as AMD’s FSR, Intel’s XeSS 2, and Razer Chroma RGB and Razer Sensa HD Haptics. So, if you’re gearing up for Dune Awakening on PC, prepare for a visually stunning and smooth experience.
What’s your take on this approach? Personally, I’m all for it. With countless subscriptions already out there, the prospect of purchasing a game and revisiting it whenever I choose sounds perfect, much like how I enjoy playing Guild Wars 2 intermittently. So, absolutely no complaints from my side. Plus, stay tuned for more updates soon, as a gameplay stream is scheduled for March 24, as hinted at the end of the Steam blog.
Will we see you navigating the dunes on May 20, or perhaps even earlier? Let us know!
