There’s been buzz around the possibility of an Xbox handheld device, and Asus just added some fuel to the fire with a teaser they put out on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In the short clip, we see an animated robot busy upgrading itself on a computer. Just as it’s about to get those improvements rolling, a couple of gaming gadgets—the ROG Ally X console and the ROG Raikiri Pro controller—crash onto the scene with it. Once the dust clears, the robot transforms into what looks like a gaming console, resembling Asus’s latest top-tier handheld.
Adding even more intrigue, the official Xbox account chimed in with a reply featuring the famous side-eye meme. While nothing’s set in stone yet, Microsoft’s playful response seems to hint at Project Kennan, a venture they’re undertaking with Asus to merge Xbox and Windows into a single, cohesive platform.
Though both companies are playing their cards close to their chests, the teaser does offer us a glimpse into what might be in store for this rumored handheld. Anticipate a longer battery life, enhanced performance, increased storage capacity, and a fresh new design.
Asus rolled out this teaser on March 31, 2025, precisely at 2 PM EST. This timing was likely deliberate, ensuring the announcement wouldn’t be mistaken for an April Fool’s Day joke, especially given how many tech companies partake in such pranks. But if we take a leaf out of Asus’s book from a few Aprils ago with the ROG Ally, it’s fair to trust that this new Xbox handheld is the real deal.
It’s also worth noting that Nintendo is set to unveil the highly anticipated Switch 2 at a Nintendo Direct event on April 2. It seems Asus might be attempting to upstage Nintendo’s big moment, and while they didn’t spill much info, the teaser surely captured the attention of many PC and handheld gaming aficionados, even if it might not convert die-hard Nintendo fans.
Though a new Xbox console isn’t expected until 2027, the idea of an Xbox handheld entering the scene is certainly exciting. Ideally, we’re hoping this new device will run Xbox games natively, not just be a Windows 11 device dolled up with an Xbox facade.
