Intel is finally addressing the performance drop issues with its Arc GPUs, especially with older CPUs, and has launched an investigation to tackle and fix these problems.
Intel Takes Action on Arc GPU Performance with Older CPUs
When the Intel Arc B580 and B570 GPUs were launched, they seemed promising, with more VRAM than competitors. However, they quickly lost favor due to lackluster optimization. This isn’t just about GPU drivers; it’s a more significant issue that held the Arc Battlemage GPUs back compared to other brands. Hardware Unboxed first highlighted the disappointing performance when these GPUs were matched with older processors like the Ryzen 2000 series and Intel’s 9th gen Core processors.
It took a while, but Intel has finally acknowledged the problem. They shared an update on the forums, saying:
"We appreciate your patience. We know there are performance issues when Arc GPUs are paired with older generation processors. We’re expanding our platform support to include more configurations in our validation process, and we’re actively investigating further optimizations."
Intel seems aware of the issue but hasn’t been proactive in optimizing performance until now. They plan to extend their optimizations to cover more configurations, aiming to resolve this soon, although no specific timeline was given.
Intel needs to work on its driver updates since the hardware itself competes well with rivals’ previous-generation GPUs in recent games. We didn’t observe performance issues with the Arc B580 or B570 when using the latest AMD and Intel CPUs, so it was surprising to see them perform poorly with Intel’s own older CPUs.
With these upcoming patches, Intel might improve its standing against AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, but that doesn’t mean they’ll immediately gain significant market share. The availability of Intel Arc Battlemage GPUs remains limited, leading to their absence in the budget segment of the GPU market.
