It’s been a monumental year for gaming, and a major highlight is the news from Bethesda Game Studios. They recently announced on Bluesky that a massive 4 million players have already dived into the newly remastered version of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.
“To the over 4 million of you exploring Cyrodiil with Oblivion Remastered, we’re incredibly grateful. Thank you!” reads the heartfelt message from the studio’s social media.
After nearly two years filled with leaks and rumors, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was officially launched last Tuesday. In a surprise move known as a “shadow drop,” the game hit the storefronts the very same day, allowing eager fans to dive right in.
Interestingly, this revamp was primarily handled by Virtuos with Bethesda Game Studios lending support. The game showcases stunning new visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, along with refreshed voice recordings. However, the Gamebryo engine, a cornerstone since the original 2006 release, has been carefully refined rather than overhauled.
Of course, 4 million players don’t equate to 4 million sales. Thanks to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, subscribers can access new Xbox titles right at launch without any additional cost.
Still, it’s a significant achievement, and it’ll be fascinating to watch its player base grow. Reflecting on previous successes, another Bethesda Softworks title—MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle—also hit the 4 million player mark shortly after its release in December 2024, on Xbox and PC.
For the most part, players are thoroughly enjoying their adventures. However, PC Game Pass users are eagerly awaiting a fix for a recent update that disabled DLSS upscaling on that platform.
Currently, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (via Steam and the Xbox app), and PlayStation 5. For further insights, make sure to check out my detailed guide on the various editions of Oblivion Remastered.
