Ubisoft, the renowned French publisher, seems to be preparing to take a swing at the battle royale genre with a fresh game designed to compete with Apex Legends.
According to the scoop from Insider Gaming, this ambitious project, which goes by the codename “Scout,” has drawn noticeable parallels to Respawn and EA’s popular title. In fact, it seems the resemblance was once so striking that Scout’s artwork was almost used as its icon. Rumor has it that some of the game’s characters echo the style of those found in Apex Legends as well. It’s clear that Ubisoft has been crafting this project for quite some time.
The strategy here seems to be driven by Ubisoft’s belief that they could lure players away from Apex Legends, a game whose financial performance has been slipping somewhat, as EA has openly acknowledged. “The aim appears to be tapping into the decline in Apex’s player base, which gives Ubisoft bigwigs the impression that there’s an opportunity for another hero-based battle royale,” shares an insider.
This isn’t Ubisoft’s initial attempt at breaking into the free-to-play battle royale sector. The company previously launched Hyperscape in 2020, which unfortunately didn’t survive beyond 18 months. Moreover, Ubisoft recently decided to pull the plug on XDefiant, their free-to-play shooter, which is set to shut down toward the end of 2024.
Meanwhile, Apex Legends is gearing up for a significant overhaul with its upcoming 2.0 version, expected to debut sometime after April 2026.
