From Software recently revealed that Elden Ring has surpassed an impressive milestone, selling over 30 million copies worldwide since its launch in 2022. This achievement places it among gaming legends like Borderlands 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Diablo 3.
Elden Ring first hit the shelves on February 25, 2022, and received a major expansion with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC on June 21. Since then, 30 million gamers across PC and consoles have ventured into The Lands Between. It’s particularly noteworthy given the game’s reputation for difficulty, yet players embraced the challenge head-on.
Commercially and critically, Elden Ring has been a resounding success. Both the base game and its DLC garnered rave reviews. The transition from the Dark Souls series to an open-world format struck a chord with fans and critics alike. Despite maintaining the trademark difficulty of Dark Souls, the game did see some nerfs and balance tweaks to slightly ease the experience.
What will From Software do next with this 30 million milestone? While it’s hard to say, the company clearly recognizes the game’s status as a fan favorite. The upcoming release of Elden Ring Nightreign, a cooperative spin-off, will leverage much of Elden Ring’s world and assets, adding an intriguing twist. It’s not far-fetched to assume the studio will continue to explore and expand this successful genre.
